The STEP way:

S: Say the Problem without blame

T: Think of Solutions that are safe and respectful

E: Explore Consequences with the child (What would happen if...)

P: Pick the Best Solution with the child in order to make a plan

If and when a child experiences a situation in which they must problem-solve it is important for them to be guided by an adult they trust. It is likely that the child will first need an adult's assistance with calming down. The appropriate steps in doing so would be to provide the child with a Stop Signal in order for them to know they should begin to settle down. Next, it is important to speak with the child and help them to name their feelings in order to identify what happened and how it is making them feel. Lastly, help the child to breathe in order to calm down, count or use any method that helps them. Throughout the entire process, it is suggested that the child utilize positive self-talk. Examples of positive self-talk are: "I believe in myself", "I am going to get through this", "I will make it next time", or "I love myself".

Let me know how it goes with your child. What other kinds of ideas would you like to read about?
